Pre Screening Tool title

In order to reopen our schools to in-person instruction this month, we are required by the Maine Department of Education (MDOE) to adhere to a wide range of guidelines to protect the health and safety of each student and staff member in our schools.  Those guidelines are summarized in the Reopening Schools Framework on the MDOE website.

One of the critical components of a safe return to school is ensuring that proper health screening has taken place before students enter a school bus or a school building each day.  In this effort, we will need your assistance. Each morning, prior to sending your child to school, it is important that you conduct an individual health screening of your child by answering the following questions:

1. Within the past 24 hours, has your child experienced a fever of 100.4oF (38 C) or used a fever-reducing medicine (Ibuprofen, acetaminophen, naprosyn, etc.)  to reduce a fever or address any of the following "most common" COVID-19 symptoms?

Cough

Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

Chills

Sore throat

New loss of taste or smell

If you answer “yes” to any of the above, your child is to remain out of school, and we ask that you contact the school to identify the symptoms your child is experiencing.

2. Does your child feel sick with any TWO of the following "less common" symptoms?

Muscle pain (other than from a known injury)

Nausea or vomiting

Stomach pain

Diarrhea

Fatigue

Headache

Rash

Swelling or redness of hands/feet

Red eyes/eye drainage

Congestion/runny nose

If you answer “yes” to any TWO of the above, your child is to remain out of school, and we ask that you contact the school to identify the symptoms your child is experiencing.

3. Have you traveled outside of Maine in the past 14 days?

If you answer “yes” to this question, please contact the school to determine if the states/regions you visited require self-quarantining before your child may return to school.

Linked here is a one-page guide to these expectations that should be printed and posted somewhere handy in your home, so that you will be reminded to conduct the health screening each day.

If your child arrives at school and indicates a “yes” response to any of the above questions, you will be contacted and your child will be quarantined until such time as they may be dismissed from school (as soon as possible).

Thank you for your assistance in this critical component of our reopening plan.
